Textile Migrants

The story

Textile Migrants is the next chapter of this material research: an evolving stop-motion animation and filmed performance built from the same textile and responsive-material practice as Textile Creatures, now carried into a specific narrative of displacement and adaptation. Handmade puppets — coiled hemp ribbon, thermochromic and hydrochromic surfaces, wire and thread — move through built worlds, testing how far a material can carry a story of belonging.

The puppets

The puppets are thermochromic and hydrochromic — their colour and texture shift with light, heat, and water rather than holding one fixed appearance. The project grows out of my practice-led PhD in Design at the Royal College of Art, where I first researched puppetry's "weird materials," and extends that enquiry into a question of kinship: identity and belonging as something made and remade in relation to others, not a fixed possession.
